R J Rendell was a well known photographer in the Tauranga district during the first part of the 20th Century.
His glass slide photographs of life throughout New Zealand were re photographed by his son Alf Rendell (also a well known local photographer) who gave copies of the images to Tauranga City Libraries in 2012. Some of these are viewed within this article, the original collection can be viewed in the 'related items' on the right hand column.

ELLERBEOK STUDIO. MR ELLERBECK, owing to continuous Orders coming in from the Country, and unable to attend to them owing to Studio work, has engaged a Traveller (Mr R. J. RENDELL), who has had great experience in this class of work, and any Orders entrusted with him will be satisfactorily carried out. Mr Rendell is now stationed at Te Karaka. Any communication left at the ELLERBECK STUDIO will be forwarded to him.

ROBERT JOHN RENDELL
A settler in the Tauranga district for 23 years. Robert John Rendell of Judea, and formerly of Edgcumbe Road, died last week. Born at Nailsea, Somerset, England in 1775 (mistake – should read 1875), Mr Rendell came to New Zealand with his parents, who settled in Auckland, at the age of four. He spent his boyhood and early life in Auckland and Hamilton. For some time he resided at Rotorua, later coming to Tauranga where he resided for 23 years. Mr Rendell was a member of the Tauranga High School Committee for many years and took a keen interest in local affairs until failing health compelled him to give up work in these directions. He is survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters. There are five grandchildren.
