Topic type:
The statue of Canon Jordan is located inside the Memorial Gates at Wharepai Domain, 91 Cameron Road, Tauranga. It was constructed in 1915.
From Built Heritage website: "Canon Charles Jordan B.A. T.C.D. was the first vicar of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Tauranga, established in 1875. He was also mayor of Tauranga several times.
Jordan was born in Ventry, Ireland and was educated at Trinity College in Dublin. He was ordained in 1867 and served in Bangor, Ireland before coming to Tauranga in 1873 as the first vicar for the Holy Trinity parish. He was vicar for nearly 40 years, and was also a prominent figure in public life. There was hardly a local body with which he was not identified. He was a member, and frequently a chairman, for the Tauranga School Committee, Bay of Plenty Hospice and Charitable Aid Board, a member of the Licensing Committee, and Chaplain of the New Zealand Defence Forces. He also served as Chairman of Town Board and was elected Mayor on nine occasions. (Elections were held annually until 1915). He balanced his secular and spiritual obligations to great effect.
He died on 5th October 1912, but was such a prominent citizen that the town erected a statue in his memory inside the Memorial Gates of the Domain in 1915."
