In 1993 the Local History Staff of Tauranga District Libraries (as it was called then) compiled a booklet Mana Wahine highlighting the prominent women in the Tauranga Moana area. This is one of the mini biographies from the booklet. Note that some comments in the text relate to the time of the original publication (1993).

Elizabeth and Christina Callaway grew up in the Wairoa and Bethlehem areas of Tauranga and later became teachers who taught in many Maori schools throughout the North Island.

The twins were born in 1885, their mother being Taiparoroa Te Awahou Utiku and their father Robert Callaway, a farmer, carpenter and often an interpreter for the Maori Land Court

Education of children was considered paramount by the twins’ parents.  The girls attended Bethlehem School before gaining scholarships to Hukarere Maori Girls' College in Napier.  Christina went to teach in various schools around the country, while Elizabeth remained at Hukarere for many years.

The influence of the sisters’ teaching methods was widespread.  Pupils in schools at Hukarere, Waima, Whakarewarewa, Papamoa, Bethlehem, Matakana and Rangiwaea benefited from being taught by the twins.  Elizabeth was instrumental in getting a school hut for Rangiwaea, and taught for several years at the Kotukutuku School on Matakana Island.

Their teaching days were the happiest of their lives and both took pride in the knowledge that so many people, directly and indirectly, gained so much from their teaching.

Christina died on 4 September 1974 at the age of 89 while Elizabeth died a year later on 25 October 1975.  They are buried on Matakana Island in the Opureora Urupa.
