New Zealand icon Margaret Mahy was a children's librarian as well as a much loved author of children's books. Her picture books, novels and collections of short stories have entertained and inspired generations of kiwi's. This page is a collection of thoughts, memories and reflections about our world famous author.
"I love the way Margaret Mahy's work touched so many children. They really related to her funny words and the depth of her stories. I think she encouraged children to enjoy the imagination of their youth and brought the child out in many of us. She will live on in her stories." Claire Cooper (librarian)
"I was born in Whakatane, the same place as Margaret Mahy. One of my earliest memories is of her in her clown wig reading to our class in the school library at James Street School. I can't remember what she was reading - just the fantastic wig. The morning following her death I was booked in for a class visit at my child's school. I ran around and grabbed all the Margaret Mahy books that grace my own bookshelves to show the class and ended up reading them 'A Lion in the Meadow' which they thought was fantastic!" Debbie McCauley (librarian).
"Margaret Mahy was a legend. I'm glad that she was recognised in her lifetime and I hope her reputation and stories will live on for many generations. I took my children to hear her read at a children's library and it was cosy and enjoyable. Like Debbie I don't remember what was read, but I do remember the wacky multicoloured wig. Margaret Mahy's adult children have described her as eccentric. I think it was this different way of viewing the world that allowed her to take us to many places in our imagination that we may never have gone if it wasn't for such a gifted communicator. RIP." Jocelyn Mist (librarian).
"What a gem she was - my kids were so lucky to grow up with her books - The Great White Man-Eating Shark is my favourite - hilarious, clever, quirky, with a moral tucked in there." Wendy Ballard (librarian).
