Topic: Rendell's Tauranga - Historic Tauranga From Above by Alf Rendell and Fiona Kean

Topic type:

Ninety-seven year old Alf Rendell has produced a stunning work in collaboration with his friend, respected Tauranga historian Fiona Kean. This very special book features aerial photographs of Tauranga and surrounds which were taken between 1946 and 1956 during a period when Tauranga started to grow from a small, coastal fishing village into a city.

Alf Rendell was born in Whakatane on 2 November 1917. His father Robert John Rendell was a photographer, but business was poor as the effects of World War I were felt. The family moved to Tauranga where Robert eventually bought a photography business. In January 1939 Alf took over the business before leaving town to serve in World War II. On his return he built up the business and paid friends to take him up in their aircraft where he captured stunning shots of the local area. Rendell's Tauranga - Historic Tauranga From Above showcases Alf's many years of photography in the Tauranga area.

Book Reviews:

Ninety-seven year old Alf Rendell has produced a stunning work in collaboration with his friend, respected Tauranga historian Fiona Kean. This very special book features aerial photographs of Tauranga and surrounds which were taken between 1946 and 1956 during a period when Tauranga started to grow from a small, coastal fishing village into a city. Alf would pay friends to take him up in their aircraft so he could capture aerial shots of the area. The book showcases Alf's best work within its 160-pages. Included with the photographs are quotes from Tauranga City Council’s oral history archive which provide a stunning context to many of the images. Financial backing from Legacy Trust ensures the book is affordable with profits from sales going towards a local photography scholarship. Included is a statement from Bill Holland of Legacy Trust, an introduction by Fiona Kean, a photo list, a list of sources and an index. The quality of the book is outstanding; it will stand as a fitting tribute to what has been a lifetime of achievement by this remarkable photographer who is a Tauranga treasure. Highly recommended - Debbie McCauley (10 November 2015).

In September 2016 the book was reprinted by Paper Plus.
