Tauranga's celestial compass demonstrates how Polynesian travellers once navigated the Pacific using the heavens as their guide. Four pou face north, south, east and west. Between them are plain posts that represent the full horizon of 28 Polynesian 'houses'.

Experienced waka voyager Jack Thatcher lined up the pou using both modern and traditional techniques.

The compass was blessed by Tauranga kaumatua at dawn on 2 August 2015.
