Albert Tauranga Lemon is often purported to be the first pakeha child born in Tauranga, however as Christine Clement writes 'registration of births began in Tauranga in 1860 with two registrations for that year' (p. 198).
Albert Tauranga Lemon's parents were Captain George Lemon and his wife Catherine (nee Meagher/Maher) who had married on a ship in New York harbour in 1850. The family moved to Australia. In 1863 George enlisted in the 1st Waikato Regiment No 3 Company and came to New Zealand to fight in during the New Zealand Wars., the family following aboard the 'Swiftsure', arriving on 17 February 1864.
The month after arrival, on 23 March 1864, Albert Tauranga Lemon was born. It was the month prior to the Battle of Gate Pa. It is thought that George Lemon fought at the Battle of Te Ranga on 21 June 1864 and he also served during the Tauranga Bush Campaign of 1867.
By 1887 Albert was living in Te Puke with properties on No 2 Road ('Matatirohia') and Paengaroa.
In 1902 Albert married Johanna Mary Cook (reg. 1902/1171). The marriage was reported in the Bay of Plenty Times:
WEDDING. This morning a very pretty wedding was solemnised at St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church by the Rev Father Bloomfield between Mr Albert Lemon of Te Puke, youngest son of the late Mr George Lemon of this town and Miss Josephine Mary Cook, second daughter of Mr John Cook of Grey St, Tauranga. The church was prettily decorated for the occasion and was crowded with friends of both parties. The bride was attended by Miss Washer, of Te Puke, in a pale blue dress with hat to match, and by Miss Katie Cook, who wore a pretty cream silk costume, trimmed with lace, and hat to match. The bridegroom was supported by his brother, Mr John F. Lemon, of this town. The bride wore a handsome costume of cream lustre, trimmed with cream satin, with veil, and wreath of orange blossoms, the whole effect being most recherche and artistic and reflecting great credit on the taste and skill of her sister, Miss Margaret Cook, whose creation it was. After the ceremony the happy pair, amid an extra heavy shower of rice and similar tokens of good will, embarked on a coach drawn by four spanking greys with wedding favours in their headstalls, from Mr M. P. Stewart's stables, the ribbons being held by Mr G. Leggett, who drove them to the residence of the bride's father, where a large gathering of relatives and friends took place to partake of the wedding breakfast. Later in the day the bride and bridegroom took their departure for their new home at Te Puke, amid many expressions of good wishes for their future happiness and prosperity (25 June 1902, p. 2).
They had two children together:
Johanna died, aged 37, in 1919 (reg. 1919/12249)
In 1927 Albert married Elizabeth Cross (reg. 1927/3690).
Albert died in Auckland, aged 73, on 24 March 1938 (reg. 1938/15458) and was buried in Hillsborough Cemetery.
