Topic: Whakatāne Maize by Debbie McCauley

Topic type:

This poem was published in the 'Bay of Plenty Times' on 4 December 2010 (p. 18).

Languid fields of rich green maize
stretch out in all directions
from the house of cream-
coloured brick

A child’s playground, a paradise
of imaginary characters,
adventures
of knights and princesses and
monsters
abounding in the sweetly-dappled
shade,
that sways and rustles with the
breeze.

Run! Jump! Creep or blunder
into a spider web, sticky with heat
Escape from the fearsome battle
that terrifies the senses. Turn,
panicked,
flee headlong
through menacing rows, burst
into sunshine, safe and free
from the battalion of green-clad
soldiers.
