Topic: Closing the School Library by Debbie McCauley

Topic type:

This poem was written in reaction to the decision to close the library at the Tauranga Rudolf Steiner School in 2009. It was published in the Bay of Plenty Times on 2 December 2009 (p. 28).

Ignorance has won
this battle. The war
moves on, but
is not over.

Soldiers lie in disarray, lean
limply into each other.
Casualties,
prone, stacked high,
shoved roughly into boxes
by uncaring, unloving hands
forced into a darkness
that spreads further
than themselves

Somewhere is a spark
of reason. There must be
someone who clearly thinks
this is so wrong.
