Sarah Hart (nee Culley) was pregnant with her second child when her husband committed a burglary and went on the run for eighteen months before being caught and sentenced to seven years aboard a prison hulk. She managed to keep herself and her two children alive during this time. The family arrived in New Zealand on board the 'Tyne' in 1841. Sarah was my fourth great grandmother - Debbie McCauley (2013).

Sarah Culley was born in 1806 to William and Margaret Culley (nee Corne) who married in East Farleigh, Kent, England, on 7 April 1792. Sarah was baptised in Bearstead, Kent, England, on 12 October 1806.

On 24 August 1823 Sarah married bricklayer Edward Hart at St Mary's Church, Thornham [Thurnham], Kent, England. Their first child was born in 1823 and Sarah was pregnant with their second in 1825 when Edward commited a burglery and then spent the following eighteen months on the run. How Sarah coped during this period is a mystery, but she must have been a very strong character. Edward was eventually caught and convicted on 16 August 1827. He was sentenced to seven years aboard a prison hulk so Sarah and the children just had to carry on somehow without him.

After Edward's release, he returned to his wife and children. The Hart family arrived in Wellington, New Zealand, aboard the Tyne on 9 August 1841.

The children of Edward and Sarah Hart:
