Bay of Plenty Times (4 September 1872).

Caption

These days the Bay of Plenty Times count’s itself among New Zealand's largest daily newspapers, but for many years its very existence was precarious and it came close to folding on a number of occasions. The first issue was published on 4 September 1872 as a bi-weekly comprising four pages in a tabloid size and costing three pence per issue. The founder and editor of the paper was William Bartleet Langbridge (c1840-1884) who on 19 January 1884 would die of a stoke at the Clarendon Hotel, the coroner finding the cause ‘excessive drinking’. Front page of the first issue of the Bay of Plenty Times scanned by Debbie McCauley.
