Topic: 30 years of Hairy Maclary (2013)

Topic type:

A fabulously popular character, Hairy Maclary celebrated his 30th birthday in 2013.

Hairy Maclary was created in 1979. Whilst living in Lower Hutt, Lynley Dodd made a small sketch of a rather unkempt-looking dog on the page of a lined shopping pad. Underneath she penned the words:

'One morning at nine,
on his way to the park,
went Hairy Maclary
from Donaldson's Dairy'

and Hairy Maclary was born.

The words later changed slightly, but Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy finally appeared in 1983, the first in a wonderful new series with rhythmic verse. Hairy is often accompanied by his other animal friends which include dachshund Schnitzel von Krumm, dalmation Bottomley Potts and Old English sheepdog Muffin McClay:

'Schnitzel von Krumm
with a very low tum,
Bitzer Maloney
all skinny and bony,
Muffin McClay
like a bundle of hay,
Bottomley Potts
covered in spots,
Hercules Morse
as big as a horse

and Hairy Maclary
from Donaldson's Dairy'

Hairy's breed is thought to be Skye Terrier. The animal friends are often terrorised by the tomcat Scarface Claw, the 'toughest Tom in town'.

Over five million Hairy Maclary books have been sold worldwide, with over nine million Dodd books sold overall.

Hairy is to be immortalised in a 'storybook scene' of bronze sculptures which will include some of his friends: Scarface Claw, Slinky Malinki, Hercules Morse, Muffin McLay, Bottomley Potts, Schnitzel von Krumm, Bitzer Maloney and Zachary Quack. The sculptures are to created by Brigitte Wuest who has worked with Peter Jackson and Weta Workshop during the past ten years. More information on the project can be found by clicking here.

Birthday Celebrations:

A display of work by Lynley Dodd can be viewed in the children's area of the Tauranga City Libraries.
