Horatio Douglas Dumbleton was born in Katikati in 1889 (reg. 1889/12084). His parents were Arthur Roderick and Mary Phoebe Dumbleton (nee Stewart) who married at Martray in Katikati on 1 January 1885.

Horatio worked as a Crane Driver. He married Ellen Louisa Ryan in Wellington on 4 September 1909 (reg. 1909/7802) and they lived at 154b Taranaki Street in Wellington.

Horation and Ellen adopted a child, Thora Olive Dumbleton, known as "Minnie Louise". Minnie Louise was born in Wellington on 25 June 1911 (reg. 1920/27703).

Horatio Douglas Dumbleton (1889-1918)

Lance Corporal Horatio Douglas Dumbleton  was killed in action at Ypres, Belgium, on 12 October 1917 (reg. 1918/22083) aged 28. His death notice appeared in the Bay of Plenty Times on 5 December 1917:

DUMBLETON Mr Vesey Stewart has been informed by cable sent by his daughter, Mrs Dumbleton, that her eldest [second] son Douglas, the former's grandson, was killed in action on October 12th. Some delay has occurred in sending the final announcement, the first cable stating that he was missing. The late Douglas Dumbleton who joined the 23rd Reinforcements, was married, but has left no family. His paternal grandfather was the late General Dumbleton, a member of an old Hampshire Country family. A cheery letter was received by Mrs Dumbleton from her son since the news of his death reached her, in which he said that he would soon be home again, as the Huns were licked and could not hold out much longer. A letter received under such sad circumstances adds to a loving mother's grief (p. 2).

Horatio was buried in the Passchendaele New British Cemetery, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

Ellen died in Wellington in August 1919 (reg. 1919/10990). Minnie Louise married William Alexander Gordon McKain (1909-?) in 1937.
