Oliver Turner served with the Durham Light Infantry during World War I. He was my husband's second great uncle - Debbie McCauley.

Oliver Turner was born at Bramley, West Yorkshire, on 20 July 1892. His parents were Oliver and Elizabeth Turner (nee Shipp). He married Florence Dorothy Maddison at Gateshead, Tyne and Wear in 1922. Florence was born at Gateshead in early 1900.

Oliver was employed as steam wagon driver for Felling Council. There were two daughters:

  1. Renee Turner (1923-1999)
  2. Joyce Turner (1934-1993)

The family resided in the Gateshead area until the early 1930’s when they moved to the Pontefract area of Yorkshire where Oliver was employed as a concreter by Higgs and Hills Construction Ltd.  Oliver was an excellent concreter and helped build Ferrybridge Power Station and a power station near Sheffield.

Oliver served in the Army during the World War I (No: 25690) as private with the Durham Light Infantry. He was later transferred as Private (No: 647536) to the Labour Corps.

Oliver Turner died at Pontefract, West Yorkshire, on 14 December 1974.
