Topic type:

Harold Gordon Garmonsway was killed during World War I, on 27 March 1918 at the Battle of Somme. He was my second great uncle - Debbie McCauley.

Harold Gordon Garmonsway (1889-1918)Harold Gordon Garmonsway was born on 18 January 1889 (reg. 1889/17525). His parents were Thomas and Albertina Garmonsway (nee Meyer) who married in St John's Church, Te Awamutu, on 14 August 1880 (reg. 1880/1949).

Harold worked as a horse trainer. On 26 January 1914 the Waikato Times reported that Harold had failed to provide financial support to his mother, Albertina:

An Unnatural Son, FAILED TO SUPPORT HIS MOTHER. Harold Gordon Garmonsway was proceeded against at the Hamilton S. M. Court today for failing to comply with an order for the maintenance of his mother. The amount due on December 8 last was £3 5s. Defendant was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, the sentence to be cancelled if the arrears are paid (p. 4).

It is doubtful that Harold was actually sent to prison!

Harold embarked with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (29th Reinforcements E Company) on 13 August 1917 from Wellington aboard the Mokoia. Their destination was Glasgow in Scotland (Service No: 56589).

Harold was aged 29 when he killed during World War I at the Battle of the Somme, on 27 March 1918 (reg. 1918/28052) near Pas de Calais, France. At the time he was serving with the Auckland Infantry Regiment (2nd Batallion).

He is remembered on the Grevillers (New Zealand) Memorial.
