To mark 75 years since the Battle of Britain in 1940 Lee and Lynn White, in their capacity as leaders of the 16 Squadron ATC Tauranga, organised a commemoration which was held at Classic Flyers on Sunday 20 September 2015. Photos: Fiona Kean.

Around 100 people attended the commemoration which started with a fly over courtesty of Curtis Stearman in a De Havilland Harvard and the playing of the Last Post.

Unit Commander of the 16 squadron Air Training Corp, and RNZAFA executive committee member Lynn White did an excellent job as MC. Also speaking was Royal New Zealand Airforce Wing Commander Darryl Cockroft and retired RAF group captain David Love.

Three 16Sqn leading air cadets spoke during the commemoration; Cassia Blythe-Graham, Brooke Taylor, and Louis Donovan. One spoke about Sir Keith Parks (whose family was in attendance), another spoke on life for civilians in London during the war, and the next about the nine lives of a pilot. The involvement of the cadets throughout  the commemoration made it special.

The Battle of Britain was fought during World War II between 10 July and 31 October 1940. During the campaign the German Air Force waged a war of terror against the United Kingdom, trying to wipe out Britain's air defences so the Nazi's could invade. It was first large aerial bombing campaign and is often hailed as a turning point of the Second World War.

'135 New Zealanders who served in RAF Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain, 20 lost their lives. Another 29 New Zealanders died serving in Bomber Command and eight in Coastal Command. In all, 57 New Zealand airmen died during the course of the battle' (NZHistory.net).
