Rutherford Denholm McCully worked in Tauranga as a journalist for the Bay of Plenty Times. He served in World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945).

Rutherford Denholm McCully was born in Sefton, Canterbury on 9 August 1897 (reg. 1897/15745). His parents were Rev. Robert and Alice Margaret McCully (nee Denholm).

Rutherford was a medical student and an officer in the Dunedin Training Corps before he volunteered for World War I from Dunedin on 16 August 1917.

He was promoted to Corporal on 11 September 1917.

On 9 January 1918 he was admitted to the Military Hospital in Tidworth suffering from Rubella. He was discharged on 21 January 1918.

During his service in France he was admitted to hospital suffering from Trench Fever.

He caught influenza in London on 12 February 1919. The following day he was admitted to the Military Hospital in Tidworth suffering from influenza. He was transferred to Hornchurch on 25 February 1919. His papers state that he was debilitated following influenza, having had three attacks within the last twelve months and his voice, heart and lungs being affected. He was judged unfit for war service for three months. He returned to New Zealand aboard the Hororata on 23 September 1919.

He married Annie Wilson Hodges in 1921, divorcing in August of 1931.

On 31 July 1940 he signed up for World War II, his occupation given as journalist. He entered camp on 18 September 1942. 

Rutherford moved to Tauranga in c1954. There he worked as a journalist for the Bay of Plenty Times.

He died in Tauranga on 4 May 1971, aged 73 (reg. 1971/31786).
