Paul Ronayne came into Tauranga City Library during the 'Threads of Memory' project and talked about his relative, John Gregors Petersen, who was killed in action at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915.

John Gregors Petersen (1895-1915)

John Gregors Petersen was born in 1895. His parents were Carl John Gregors and Johanne Antonette Frederikke Petersen. He was also known as 'John George Petersen'. John's father, Carl, died the same year he was born, at age 42 (reg. 1895/3079). John was killed in action at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. His obituary appeared in the Wairarapa Daily News on 15 June 1915:

The name of another Carterton boy is added to the roll of honour on the latest casualty list, that of Corporal John Gregors Petersen, youngest son of Mrs A. E. Petersen, of Park Road, Carterton, says the Carterton "News". The gallant young fellow met his death in the first fight at the Dardanelles, when the New Zealanders earned the praises of their King for devotion and bravery.

He is remembered on the Lone Pine Memorial, Lone Pine Cemetery, Anzac, Turkey.
