In 2015 Des Price came in to the Tauranga City Libraries to remember his great uncles who served during World War I, as part of the Threads of Memory project. Des had two relatives who were killed in action at Passchendaele on the same day, 12 October 1917. Interviewer: Stephanie Smith. Photos: Lee Switzer.

Martin and Ann Swenson (nee Corkill) lived in Ngawaka, just north of Taihape. They had eleven children, the three eldest sons serving during World War I:

Matthew Swenson (1889-1965)

Matthew was born in 1889. He returned to New Zealand after the war (Service Number: 52897). Matthew married Millicent. Matthew died in 1965.

John Cornelius Swenson (1891-1917) Killed in Action

John was born in 1891. He served in E Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Rifle Brigade (Service Number: 23/2097). John was killed in action at Passchendaele on 12 October 1917. He was aged 26.

Edgar Harold James Swenson (1892-1970)

Edgar was born in 1892. He served overseas and returned home (Service Number: 34167). He never married. Edgar died in 1970.

Laury Salter Williams (1892-1917) Killed in Action

Laury was born in 1892 (reg. 1892/17608). His parents were Thomas Robert and Matilda Freewell Williams. Laury was killed in action at Passchendaele on 12 October 1917 (reg. 1918/68470). He was aged 25 (Service Number: 25765).
