In 2015 Paul O'Neil came in to the Tauranga City Libraries to remember his grandfather Alfred James Cowley, as part of the Threads of Memory project. Interviewer: Debbie McCauley. Photos: Lee Switzer.

Alfred James Cowley was born in Auckland on 3 December 1892 (reg. 1893/1634). His parents were William and Lydia Sells Cowley (nee Walker) who married in 1882 (reg. 1882/225).

Alfred worked for the Auckland Harbour Board before enlisting for World War I on 24 August 1914. He served with the 1st Battalion, Auckland Infantry Division.

Alfred died at the age of 77 in 1970 (reg. 1970/28572).
