Katikati born Russell Freeland Walford saw action during World War II in both Egypt and Italy. He was killed in action on 16 December 1943.

Russell Freeland Walford (1914-1943)Russell Freeland Walford was born in Katikati in 1914. His parents were Edmund Freeland and Winnifred Elsie Walford (nee Trevor) who married in New Plymouth in 1905.

Russell grew up in Katikati but attended Tauranga District High School.

After joining up for World War II, most of Russell's military training was at Waiouru as part of the Divisional Calavry Unit. He later transferred to the 1st Battalion New Zealand Army Tank Brigade. He saw active service in both Egypt and Italy.

Russell was serving in Italy when he was killed on 16 December 1943. He was aged 29.

Russell is remembered in Tauranga's Memorial Grove, two rows of totara trees located on Fifteenth Avenue which stand as a memorial to 41 former Tauranga District High School students killed during World War II (1939-1945).

The Katikati town clock in front the of Memorial Hall was erected in Russell's memory and he is also listed on the Katikati School Roll of Honour.
