Edgar James Hammond from the Medical Corps died in Tauranga after being gassed during World War I. His headstone reads: 'In memory of our dearly loved son Edgar James Hammond who was called to higher service 12 October 1924 aged 27 years. Go to thy home and from thy labours cease. Rest on thy sheaves; thy harvest work is done. Gone from the heart of battle and in peace, soldier, go home. With thee the fight is won.'

Edgar James Hammond was born in Tauranga on 31 March 1897 (reg. 1897/12947). His parents were Albert Edgar and Georgina Eliza Hammond who lived in Second Avenue, Tauranga.

He worked as a Chemist's assistant for A. J. Merrilees in Tauranga and was also a member of the 6th Hauraki Regiment. He was also a member of the Kings College and Tauranga Cadets.

Edgar attested in Tauranga on 24 April 1917, officially joining up for World War I on  27 June 1917.

He embarked from Wellington on 13 October 1917 as part of the  New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF), 30th Reinforcements, New Zealand Medical Corps.

  • 26 February 1918: Admitted No1 New Zealand Field Ambulance
  • 2 March 1918: Reported as suffering from pleurisy in France and admitted to hospital.
  • 11 March 1918: Moved to No.55 General Hospital in Boulogne.
  • 26 March 1918: Embarked for England
  • 30 March1918: Admitted to Southwark Military Hospital in London
  • 16 April 1918: Admitted to the No 1 New Zealand General Hospital in Brockenhurst
  • 9 May 1918: Classified 'No longer fit for war service on account of illness contracted on active service'
  • 7 May 1918: Embarked from England for New Zealand.

Edgar died in Tauranga aged 27, on 12 October 1924 (reg. 1924/9088). His war record states that he died of TB.

He was buried in Tauranga Anglican Cemetery.
