Tauranga carpenter Geoffrey Hugh Edgar Carswell was killed on 5 July 1942 when enemy aircraft attacked his convoy in North Africa. He was aged 26.

He was educated at Tauranga District High School and then worked as a carpenter.

In 1940 Geoffrey married Dorothy Olive Mary Sheldon.

He enlisted in World War II from 2nd Avenue in Tauranga, entering camp on 7 January 1941.

He was part of the bloody fighting around Ruweisat Ridge in North Africa. On 5 July 1942 the convey he was in came under attack by enemy aircraft and he was killed (reg. 1945/46050). He was aged 26.

Geoffrey is remembered in Tauranga's Memorial Grove, two rows of totara trees located on Fifteenth Avenue which stand as a memorial to 41 former Tauranga District High School students killed during World War II (1939-1945).
