Bay of Plenty Times linotype operator Kenneth Weston Papps was taken Prisoner of War but died when the ship he was being transported aboard was torpedoed by British submarine 'HMS Turbulent'.

Kenneth Weston Papps (1912-1942)Kenneth Weston Papps was born in Christchurch on 19 March 1912. His parents were Herbert Weston and Hilda Mary Papps (nee Ashley) who married in Greymouth on 23 July 1908.

On leaving Tauranga District High School he worked as a linotype operator for the Bay of Plenty Times.

He was shot during action. After recovering he was in a ction at the battle for Sid Rezegh. 

He was captured along with 12 officers and 139 other ranking personnel in the battle at El Alamein.

On 17 August 1942, whilst being transported by sea between North Africa and Italy, the prisoners ship 'SS Nino Bixio' was deliberately torpedoed by British submarine 'HMS Turbulent'118 New Zealand prisoners of war died.

'His family were kept under the misapprehension by the Italian authorities, for almost a year, that he was alive in a prison camp, even to the extent of accepting food parcels and mail during that time' (Familytreemaker)

Kenneth is remembered in Tauranga's Memorial Grove, two rows of totara trees located on Fifteenth Avenue which stand as a memorial to 41 former Tauranga District High School students killed during World War II (1939-1945).
