Tauranga man Oscar Henry Oden was on an operation over Zuider Zee in 1944 when he was hit by flak (anti-aircraft fire) and reported missing.

Oscar Henry Oden (1923-1944)Oscar Henry Oden was born on 11 January 1923 to Alexis Schiller and Mary Ellen Oden (nee Williams) who married in New Zealand in 1908 (reg. 1908/6153). He attended Tauranga District High School.

He trained for the Air Force in Levin in 1941. Oscar was awarded his flying badge and commission to the rank of Pilot Officer in Canada. He was then posted to England.

In 1944 after flying both Hurricane and Spitfire flighters he changed to a Typhoon Rocket Projectile aircraft. It was while on an operation over the Zuider Zee on 11 December 1944 that he was hit by flak (anti-aircraft fire) and reported missing.

Oscar is remembered in Tauranga's Memorial Grove, two rows of totara trees located on Fifteenth Avenue which stand as a memorial to 41 former Tauranga District High School students killed during World War II (1939-1945).
