Tauranga's Fifteenth Avenue is the site of two rows of totara trees which stand as a memorial to 41 former Tauranga District High School students killed during World War II (1939-1945). They are known as the 'Memorial Grove'.

Two rows of totara trees are situated on Tauranga's Fifteenth Avenue. They stand as a memorial to 41 former Tauranga District High School students killed during World War II (1939-1945).

The trees border Nicholson Field, part of Tauranga Boys' College. They were planted by Charles Hansen in 1949. Hansen's son, Neil Gilbert Hansen (1918-2002), had served in the 2NZEF for four years during World War II and was keen to see his fallen comrade's honoured.

Memorial Grove (Tauranga)

In 1928 a totara tree had been planted at 116 Roberts Street in Tauranga. It was from this tree that Charles took the cuttings that he nurtured before planting on Fifteenth Avenue. He continued to care for the trees until his death.

The memorial cairn was dedicated by Reverend J Nairn in 1957. The names that appear on it are as follows:
