Tauranga painter Leslie Parmenter Stewart died of disease in France on 5 January 1917 whilst serving during World War I. Story and photograph by Debbie McCauley.

Leslie Parmenter Stewart was born in Geraldine, New Zealand, on 23 July 1895. His parents were James and Emily Matilda Stewart (nee Lovely) who married in Geraldine on 17 July 1878. His middle name 'Parmenter' was his grandmother's maiden name. She was Sarah Parmenter.

By 1905 Leslie had moved to Tauranga where he worked as a painter. He was also a Hauraki Regiment Volunteer, a hockey player, a scoutmaster, and involved in the Methodist Church.

Leslie enlisted during World War I on 19 October 1915 and served with the Auckland Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion (Service No. 12/3839). His last recorded rank was Lance Corporal.

Leslie died from disease in France on 5 January 1917, aged 21. He had been admitted to the 1st Casualty Receiving Station, France, where he died of pneumonia and pleurisy. Leslie was buried in the Estaires Communal Cemetery at Nord in France.
