

Mount Maunganui school teacher George Fisher Stephenson was killed in action in Belgium on 26 July 1917. He is remembered on the Anzac War Memorial Cenotaph at Mount Maunganui. Story researched and written by Debbie McCauley.
George Fisher Stephenson was born in Coromandel on 3 November 1890 (reg. 1890/13287). His parents were George and Mary Anne Stephenson (nee Fisher) who married in New Zealand in 1886 (reg. 1886/226).
He worked as a school teacher at Mount Maunganui Primary School.
George enlisted on 27 October 1914 and served with the Auckland Infantry Regiment, 6th Company, 1st Battalion (Service No. 12/1511). His last recorded rank was Lance Corporal.
He was killed in action at Ypres, Belguim on 26 July 1917, aged 26.
George is remembered on the Anzac War Memorial Cenotaph at Mount Maunganui.
