Claude worked as a Bank Clerk for the Bank of New Zealand. He was also a footballer.

He enlisted on 24 November 1916 and served with the New Zealand Machine Gun Battalion (Service No. 41998). His last rank was 2nd Lieutenant.

He was taken prisoner of war (POW) and died of disease in Germany on 13 September 1918, aged 29.
