John James Salt was born in Tauranga on 22 February 1899. His parents were Joseph and Sarah Salt.

He was a labourer with New Zealand Railways.

He was underage, being only 17 when he enlisted on 7 March 1916. He served with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. His last rank was Lance Corporal.

He was killed in action in France on 12 September 1918, aged 19.
