Corporal Mark Wilmot Rowe was killed in action during the Second Battle of the Somme in France on 27 March 1918. He was aged 24. Story by Debbie McCauley.

Mark Wilmot Rowe was born in Thames, New Zealand, on 7 May 1893 (reg. 1893/108). His parents were William John and Catherine Row (nee Kneebone) who married in Thames on 23 July 1879 (reg. 1879/1773).

Mark was a member of the Tauranga Rifle Club as well as being a cricketer and footballer. He worked as a farmer at Wairoa.

On 25 August 1915 Mark enlisted to fight during World War I, serving with the Canterbury Infantry Battalion, 1st Battalion (Service No. 6/3449). Two months later, on 23 October 1915, he was admitted to hospital suffering from influenza. By 9 January 1916 Mark was able to rejoin his battalion. They embarked for France on 16 April 1916.

Mark was wounded in the field on 8 July 1916, suffering an injury to his back. He rejoined his unit on 15 July.

In February 1917 Mark was suffering from mumps and by May 1917 severe typhoid. He recovered and was able to rejoin his battalion once again on 3 June 1917.

Just a month later,  on 8 July 1917, he was wounded in action. Mark was promoted to Corporal on 5 October 1917.

On 18 January 1918 Mark was in London suffering injured fingers.

Corporal Mark Wilmot Rowe was killed in action during the Second Battle of the Somme in France on 27 March 1918. He was aged 24. Mark was buried on the Beaumont-Hamel front. He is remembered on the Grevillers (New Zealand) Memorial in Grevillers British Cemetery, Pas-de-Calais, France.

Mark's parents were both buried in the Tauranga Methodist Cemetery.
