Maori Pioneer Battalion soldier Para Davy Rewi from Maungatapu died at the 45th Casualty Clearing Station in France on 8 November 1918 from bronchial pneumonia. Story by Debbie McCauley.

Para Davy Rewi was born in Maungatapu, Tauranga, on 5 March 1896. His parents were Rewiti Kiekie and Ani Davy. Rewiti was born at Maungatapu, while Ani was from the Ngapuhi iwi.

It is most likely that Para was the younger brother of fellow soldier Waru Davie Rewi (1894-1920) who died in Tauranga from tuberculosis on 27 August 1920.

Para was self-employed as a farmer at Maungatapu.

He enlisted to fight during World War I from Tauranga on 13 March 1917. Para served with the Maori Pioneer Battalion (Service No. 19703).

On 30 October 1918 he was reported as suffering from pneumonia.

Private Para Davy died of bronchial pneumonia at the 45th Casualty Clearing Station in France on 8 November 1918, aged 22. He was buried in Awoingt British Cemetery at Nord, France.

His medals were sent to Ani Davy Rewiti Kiekie via the Salvation Army in Tauranga.
