George Rangitikei Rewa from Motiti Island was killed in action at the Somme in Northern France on 31 August 1916. Story by Debbie McCauley.

George Rangitikei Rewa was born on Motiti Island off Tauranga on 2 July 1892. His parents were Hori Rangitikei and Te Aurere Riritaki. 

He worked as a labourer.

George enlisted to serve in World War I on 14 November 1914.

He and served with B Company, 1st Maori Contingent (Service No. 16/115). His last rank was Private.

On 13 July 1915 George received a gunshot wound to his foot whilst fighting at Gallipoli. After hospital treatment he was returned to duty on 7 December 1915.

On 9 April 1916 George and his unit were sent to France.

George was killed in action on 31 August 1916 at the Somme in Northern France, aged 24. He is remembered on the Caterpillar Valley (New Zealand) Memorial at the Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France.

His father, Hori, died the following year and George was mentioned in his obituary in the Bay of Plenty Times:

The death occurred at Hairini on Sunday of Hori Rangitikei, a chief of the Patuwai tribe, and a very well-known resident of Motiti Island. The deceased, who was about fifty-five years of age, had been in failing health for some mouths. A son of deceased was killed in the operations at Gallipoli [incorrect, Somme, France]. He is survived by two sons and three daughters. The interment is to take place at Motiti Island, where the customary tangi will be held (Bay of Plenty Times, 10 July 1918, p. 2).
