Charlie Wood Rakauhemo was born in Wairoa, Tauranga, on 8 January 1893. His father was Te Raukauhemo Toka.

He worked as a farmer in Tauranga and was also part of the Tauranga Cadet Corps.

Charlie enlisted on 12 November 1914 and served with the Maori Pioneer Battalion (Service No. 16/431). His last rank was private.

He was killed in action in France on 8 July 1917, aged 24.
