After signing up underage, William Leslie Poad received a gunshot wound to the scalp whilst serving during World War I. William Leslie Poad was born in Levin on 15 August 1897 (reg. 1897/17874). His parents were William Henry and Jean Poad (nee Fraser) who married in New Zealand on 24 December 1891.

He worked as a motor engineer and was a Hauraki Regiment Volunteer.

William was underage, being only 19  when he enlisted on 20 September 1916 (Service No. 33602), giving his birth year as 1896. He served with the Auckland Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion. His last rank was private.

On 16 July 1917 William was wounded in action, receiving a gunshot wound to his scalp in France. He was sent to England to recover, ending up at Hornchurch Convalescent Camp. He returned to France on 15 April 1918.

William was killed in action at Le Cateau in France on 1 October 1918, aged 21. He was buried in the Fifteen Ravine British Cemetery at Villers-Plouich, Nord, France. His death notices appeared in both the Te Puke Times and the Bay of Plenty Times:

POAD Killed in action, in France, on 1st August, 1918, Private W. L. Poad. youngest son of Mr and Mrs W.H, Poad, of Te Puke (Te Puke Times, 1 November 1918, p. 2).

On October 1st, killed in action in France, Private William Leslie Poad, Twenty-first Reinforcements, youngest son of Mr and Mrs W H Poad, Tauranga, aged 20 years (Bay of Plenty Times, 4 November 1918, p. 2).
