

Evan Oswald McRoberts received a Royal Humane Society’s medal for gallantry for saving a life in the Tauranga Harbour in 1905. He was killed in action on 4 October 1917, aged 38.
Evan Oswald McRoberts was born in Tauranga on 8 October 1883. He was the son of James and Mary Harriet McRoberts.
He married Sarah Isabelle Whitehouse of ‘Ranui’ Hillsborough Road, Onehunga. Their child was called Norma.
He was a Clerk at the Postal Department and a Lay Preacher for the Methodist Church. He received a Royal Humane Society’s medal for gallantry for saving a life in the Tauranga Harbour in 1905.
He enlisted on 7 April 1916 and served with the Auckland Infantry Regiment (Service No. 22550). His last rank was 2nd Lieutenant.
He was killed in action in France or Ypes, Belgium on 4 October 1917, aged 38.
His younger brother Lieutenant James Irwin McRoberts was wounded at Messines.
