Greerton farmer William McKinlay owned the 'Racecourse Farm'. He received serious injuries to both legs and his left shoulder during the Battle of Passchendaele on 4 October 1917, returning to New Zealand to recuperate on 31 January 1918.

William McKinlay was born in Scotland on 27 August 1893. He was the eldest son of John and Margaret.

William was a farmer in Greerton, Tauranga. He owned the ‘Racecourse Farm’. He was a Hauraki Regiment Volunteer and was posted to the Tauranga Unit on 18 October 1912.

He enlisted on 2 April 1917 and served with the Auckland Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion.

He received serious injuries to both legs and his left shoulder during the Battle of Passchendaele on 4 October 1917, returning to New Zealand to recuperate on 31 January 1918. Later in the year he managed to spend a week with relatives in Gate Pa before returning to Auckland. He contracted influenza, dying at Auckland Hospital on 11 November 1918 (Armistice Day).
