

Robert McConnell had farmed at Ohauiti and Katikati before joining up for World War I. He was killed in action in France on 19 June 1917, aged 28
Robert McConnell was born at Christchurch on 1 November 1888. He was the eldest son of Adam and Elizabeth who later lived in Bunnythorpe, Tauranga and then Katikati. His father purchased 300 acres by Thompson’s Track in Katikati in 1919.
Robert was a farmer in Ohauiti and then Katikati.
He enlisted on 26 July 1916 and was posted to the Wellington Regiment NZEF, 9th Company, 2ndBattalion (Service No. 32042). His last rank was Private.
He was killed in action in France on 19 June 1917, aged 28.
His younger brother Malcolm was attached to the New Zealand Stationary Hospital and was a survivor of the Marquette disaster.
