

Tauranga surveyor Sydney Carlton McCarthny died of gunshot wounds to the abdomen in France on 18 August 1916, aged 21.
Sydney Carlton McCarthny was born in Thames on 18 June 1894. He was the eldest son of William and Minnie McCarthny.
He worked as a Surveyor in Tauranga and was also a Hauraki Regiment Volunteer in Tauranga from 16 June 1913. He was also a member of the Public Works Department in Tauranga before resigning to take a positions with Stevens and Goulding.
He enlisted on 16 June 1915 with Auckland Infantry Battalion, 6th Company, 1st Battalion (Service No: 12/3098). His last rank was Private.
He died of gunshot wounds to the abdomen in France on 18 August 1916, aged 21.
