Ohauiti farmer William Howard Swindley Masefield died of head and abdomen wounds in France on 14 July 1916. His older brother Keith was killed at the Somme three months later. Story researched and written by Debbie McCauley.

William Howard Swindley Masefield was born in Auckland on 8 February 1895. His parents were William and Sarah Annie Masefield (nee Howard) who married in New Zealand in 1892.

William was a farmer, working on his parents farm at Ohauiti in Tauranga.

He enlisted on 16 November 1915 with the Auckland Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion (Service No. 12/4054). His last rank was Private.

William received head and abdomen wounds in the field in France on 13 July 1916. He was admitted to the No. 2 Clearing Station, but died of his wounds the following day, 14 July 1916. He was aged 21.

He was buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord, France.

William's older brother, Keith Howard Masefield was killed in action at the Somme, France on 3 October 1916.
