Charles Walter Allan Lilley was born in Dannevirke on 26 May 1896. His parents were Walter and Jane.

Charles worked as a Mill Hand at Gamman's Mill at Omanawa Falls in Tauranga.

He enlisted on 1 October 1916 with the Auckland Infantry Regiment, Ist Battalion (Service No: 38414). He was a Lance Corporal

Charles was killed in action in France on 1 October 1918, aged 21.
