Charles Joass [also known as Charles Joss] was born in New South Wales, Australia, on 21 November 1886. His parents were James and Elizabeth Joass (nee Melmeth) who married in New South Wales, Australia on 26 December 1864.

Charles worked as a fisherman for Sanford Ltd in Tauranga.

He enlisted to fight in World War I on 25 August 1915 and served as a Private with the 1st Battalion, Otago Regiment (Service No. 8/3302).

Charles was reported missing in action at the Somme in Northern France on 27 September 1916 (reg. 1918/43477). He was aged 29. A Court of Enquiry finding on 30 November 1916 concluded that he had been killed in action.

Charles is remembered on the Caterpillar Valley (New Zealand) Memorial, Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France.

His parents are buried in New Zealand.
