Tauranga born William John Taylor Gracey worked as a tailor in Waihi. He enlisted to serve during World War I in September 1917, the month after his younger brother Charles was wounded in the trenches. William was at the Featherston Military Camp when he became ill and died on 12 November 1918 during the 1918 Influenza Pandemic. Story by Debbie McCauley.

William John Taylor Gracey was born in Tauranga on 22 February 1894 (reg. 1894/4520). His parents were James and Alice Gracey who are thought to have been from Scotland and Ireland. The family moved to Waihi in around 1897 and lived in Gladstone Road.

William was employed by Evan Morgan of Waihi as a tailor.

His younger brother, Charles James Gracey, born in Tauranga on 31 August 1895, was overseas serving during World War I. Charles was hit by a shell in the trenches on 7 August 1917, fracturing his left leg and rendering him no longer fit for war service due to his injuries. He was returned home on the hospital ship Maheno

William enlisted to serve during World War I on 27 September 1917, his enlistment form recording his religion as 'Spiritualist' and his address as Gladstone Road in Waihi.

William was with a Training Unit for the New Zealand Rifle Brigade at Featherston Military Training Camp. He contracted influenza during the 1918 Influenza Pandemic.

Private William John Taylor Gracey died of influenza at Featherston on 12 November 1918, aged 24. He was buried in Featherston Cemetery.

Alice died at the family home in Gladstone Road, Waihi, aged 52, on 27 August 1921 (reg. 1921/3651) and was buried in Waihi Public Cemetery on 29 August 1921. James died, aged 74, in Waihi on 13 August 1941 (reg. 1941/23110) and was buried in Waihi Public Cemtery on 14 August 1941.
