Private Thomas Patrick Cullen received a gunshot wound to his abdomen whilst fighting in World War I. He died of his wounds at the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station in France on 5 February 1917. Story by Debbie McCauley.

Thomas Patrick Cullen was born in Tauranga on 19 March 1885. His parents were John and Margaret Cullen (aka Killam) (nee Harland) who married in Tauranga in 1883 (reg. 1883/193). John had arrived in New Zealand with George Vesey Stewart's settlers in c1876.

The 1911 Electoral Roll shows John and Margaret living in Monmouth Street, Tauranga, with Thomas working as a storeman and living in The Strand, Tauranga. In 1928 John and Margaret were still living in Monmouth Street.

Thomas worked as a labourer for the Public Works Department in Tauranga. He was also a footballer and Athletic Club member.

Thomas enlisted to fight during World War I on 10 January 1916 (Service No. 11418). He served with the Auckland Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion.

His brother, farrier Edward James Cullen (Service No. 13/40), suffered a gunshot wound to the head whilst fighting at Gallipoli on 12 July 1915 and sent home to Auckland Hospital to recover.

Private Thomas Patrick Cullen received a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He died of his wounds at the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station in France on 5 February 1917, at the age of 30. He was buried in the Estaires Communal Cemetery in Nord, France. His medals were sent to his mother in Tauranga.
