In 1915 Tauranga Harbour Board labourer Ernest Frederick Gordon Crisp was wounded in action whilst fighting at Gallipoli. His recovery took almost a year, and then he was sent to France where he was killed in action on 2 May 1918. Story by Debbie McCauley.

Ernest Frederick Gordon Crisp was born in Emu Bay, Tasmania, Australia on 1 July 1890. He was the eldest son of Frederick David and Georgina Crisp (nee Ramskill) of Boat Harbour, Tasmania, Australia, who married on 7 April 1890.

It is not yet known when Ernest arrived in New Zealand, but he lived in Tauranga where he worked as a labourer for the Tauranga Harbour Board.

On 25 November 1914 Ernest enlisted to fight in World War I. He served with the Auckland Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion (Service No. 12/1184).

Ernest was wounded in action at Gallipoli on 8 May 1915. He was sent to the New Zealand Convalescent Hospital at Hornchurch in England, arriving on 11 January 1916. From the time he was wounded, his recovery took almost a year. By 19 April 1916 he had recovered.

On 3 July 1916 Ernest embarked for France. He managed to get into a little bit of trouble for being absent without leave and losing his helmet, for which he had to refund the cost.

Lance Corporal Ernest Frederick Gordon Crisp was killed in action in France on 2 May 1918, aged 27. He was buried in the Hebuterne Military Cemetery at Pas-de-Calais, France.

Ernest's medals were send to his mother in Tasmania, Australia.
