Charles Alfred Walter Clarebrough was born in Tauranga on 25 November 1879 (reg. 1880/615) to John William and Alice Clarebrough (nee Mannix) who married at the Roman Catholic Church in Tauranga on 4 June 1877 (reg. 1877/909).

Charles served during the Anglo-Boer War. By 1903 he was living in Victoria, Australia.

Charles worked as a decorator. In 1905 he married Alice Callander in Victoria, Australia.

During World War I Charles joined the Australian Imperial force E Squadron, 21st Battalion. His enlistment date was 25 November 1914 and he served as a 1st Lieutenant (Service No. 388/15). 

Charles was killed in action in France on 26 August 1916. He was aged 36. Charles was buried in the Pozieres British Cemetery Ovillers-La Boisselle, Pozieres, Picardie, France.
