On 11 October 1915 he enlisted in World War I and was firstly wounded in France on 11 June 1916.

Charles wrote this postcard on 21 February 1918, while recovering at Hornchurch Military Hospital in England after he was hit by shell fragments on the battlefield.

Dear Mother & Father, Please don't take a fright when you see this. I had it taken just after the Soe had been pulling me about. I wish they would send me to N.Z. but I think I will be going back to France. I wouldn't mind if it was stronger. From your ever loving son, Charles

Charles was medically discharged on 5 November 1918: 'Discharged as no longer physically fit for War Service on account of wounds received in action'.

Originally a farmer from Taranaki, Charles moved to Tauranga after Alf Smith, the husband of his sister Flora Smith, was killed in World War I. Flora Emily Alice Davies had married Alfred Smith in 1909 (reg. 1909/7743).

In 1969 Flora donated his British War Medal and his Victory Medal to The Tauranga Heritage Collection.
