Obituary, A P Coster 1933-2014

Mr Allen Coster, also known as Jim, was a former Kaimai sheep and cattle farmer. He died on Friday the 24”‘ October, 2014.  

Mr Coster’s family lived in Tauranga during the 1940s, settled at Lower Kaimai in 1953, and have farmed there since. In the early 1970s he was prominent in a coalition of local farmers and conservationists who successfully opposed a plan to convert parts of the Kaimai forests to exotic forestry. Their efforts resulted in the establishment of the Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park.

In the 1980s, he served on the Environmental Council, advising the Government on environmental issues. His farm won Supreme Award in the 2007 Bay of Plenty Ballance Farm Environment Awards and has been a Meat & Wool Board monitor farm, providing an example of good farming practice. Like his father, he was a former chairman of the Tauranga branch of Federated Farmers.

Mr Coster was a JP and involved in a variety of community activities, including the local school committee, the Kaimai Settlers‘ Association and the Rotary Club of Tauranga. of which he was President in 1999-2000. More recently, he was appointed to the Department of Social Welfare’s Benefi t sReview Committee and to the Smartgrowth Strategic Partners Forum. He has been a trustee of the Elms Foundation.

Mr Coster served in the Army’s territorial forces from 1952 to 1989 and was a former commanding officer and honorary colonel of the Hauraki Regiment. He was awarded the OBE in 1974 and was a life member. and former president of the Bay of Plenty Officers’ Club. He is survived by his wife Robyn and four children.

Father of Allen, Johanne, Paul and David, Grandfather of thirteen grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Brother of Pat Boyce, Bill and John. A service to celebrate Jims's life will be held at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, cnr Devonport Rd and Third Avenue Tauranga, on Wednesday 29th October at 2.00pm, followed by burial.
