A newspaper fragment in the album records a letter sent to Charles Hughes mother and reprinted.

"It is a sad letter that I have to write to you, but I thought you might like to hear some particulars about Charles. We had been lying in reserve all morning and got orders to advance against a Turkish position at about 12:30. Poor Charlie was hit in the stomach at about 2:30. He lived until sometime during the following night. He spoke very little after being hit but when we had carried him out he asked to see Father MacDonald. The Padre was close at hand and stayed with him I believe, until the end.

I am sure you would have been proud of Charlie if you knew what a noble death he died. He knew as soon as he was hurt that he could not live and faced it quite a calmly. I have known Charlie for quite a number of years and mourn with you in your great loss. Although you may mourn for him, Mrs. Hughes, you also have every reason to be proud of him, as he was a true soldier and a gentleman.

Charlie was one of the most popular men in the squadron. He was admired and respected by everybody. He and I were in the same section for quite a long time, so I have every reason to know all his qualities. He was ever ready to do his mates a good turn and it didn't matter how much things went against us he was cheerful. He was buried beside our field hospital near a place called Tel-el-Jemmi. If possible I will get a photo of his grave and send it to you."
