After enlisting for World War I (1914-1918) Joseph (Joe) Albert McCauley embarked as a Sapper with the Samoan Advance Party, Railway Engineers, on 15 August 1914 from Wellington for Apia. He was my first cousin thrice removed - Debbie McCauley.

Joseph (Joe) Albert McCauley was born in Manurewa, Auckland, on 10 November 1892. His father was Joseph de Haar. Helen Seel writes; About 25 years ago my aunt, Jessie Smith (Jessie Hazel Maud Govan), told me Joseph’s story. Jessie said that John Alexander Govan would not marry Sarah until she put Joseph, whom I believe was about two years  old at the time, into the Manurewa Children’s Home where he was brought up by nuns. The rest of the family did not know about his existence until they were adults. In the 1950s or 1960s communication was made between Joseph and his family, including my aunts, Jessie and Belle [Isabelle Olive May Govan]. Joseph was an old man at the time of his meeting with Jessie and Belle and was absolutely delighted to find he had family and so many of them! Jessie said that my father, John Albert Govan, did not want to know anything about it as he did not want to believe his mother had given birth to an illegitimate child! (personal communication, 22 January 2012).

On 15 August 1914 Joseph (Serial No. 4/255) embarked as a Sapper with the Samoan Advance Party, Railway Engineers, from Wellington for Apia. Joseph also worked as a Brigade fireman. He secondly embarked on 29 July 1916 as a Quartermast Sergeant with the New Zealand Rifle Bridage, 6th Reinforcements 4th Battalion (H Company) from Wellington for Devonport, England aboard the 'Ulimaroa'.

Joseph married Ivy and they had two children together:

  1. Selwyn Joseph McCauley was born on 4 October 1925. He married Elizabeth. Selwyn died in 2004 (reg. 2004/896).
  2. John McCauley who married Joan.

Joseph died in Tauranga, aged 82, on 1 July 1977 (reg. 1977/45152) . He was cremated in Tauranga. His death notice reads: McCAULEY Joseph (Reg. No. 4/255. 1st NZEF ex. NZR) – On July 1 1977, at Tauranga. Loved husband of the late Ivy and loved father and father-in-law of Selwyn and Jean and John and Joan (Birkdale) and grand popa of Moana, Rowena, Elizabeth, Tania, Lynette, Dianne and Robert. Aged 82 years. Service at the Tauranga Crematorium Chapel, Pyes Pa at 2 p.m. Monday. Cut flowers only please. Jones and Company, Funeral Directors (Bay of Plenty Times, 1 July 1977).
